"Mind you, I'm not totally against workbooks - I just would never, ever, want to limit
my children's education to filling in someone else's blanks." -Another Homeschool Mom

You Might Be An Unschooler If…
By Emm Mangum
April 29, 2003

…your homeschooling friends don't understand how you can teach your kids without workbooks, textbooks, or spending 6 hours a day at the kitchen table.

…you enjoy, in fact, you make it a point to do all the errands with your kids when other children are in school.

…your 6 year old doesn't know all of the alphabet, but can show you the city where each of his pen-pals live, quote the population there and describe the state's flag.

…your 8 year old can label and explain the parts of almost any train ever made, but can't add double digits very well, YET.

…your children would rather watch PBS, The Discovery Channel or The Learning Channel instead of playing the Playstation.

…you don't worry when your children do want to play the Play Station and they play for hours and hours.

…besides reading library books and comic books, your child also reads the Bible.
…your child isn't afraid to ask questions and actually wait for the answer.

…your conversations in the car include topics such as how God created everything, Native American chiefs, NASCAR Racing and what to add to your web-sites.

…your children play doctor and know the correct medical terms and functions for every internal organ.

…your extended family comes to visit and asks where the textbooks are and before you have a chance to explain, your children have already explained it better than you could.

…your children's science curriculum consists of experiments in the refrigerator, freezer, closet, on the table and in the dirt, but there were no textbooks involved.

…you trust your child to learn what he/she needs to learn on their own timetable and nobody else's.

…your child doesn't know what homework is.

…you don't worry about what grade level your child should be in or what the schools say he should be learning at a certain age.

These are our own experiences with unschooling and yours are guaranteed to be very different.
